Description
Leucovorin (Leucovorin) is an antidote agent (agent that neutralizes the effects of another drug or a poison). It is typically used to prevent harmful effects of methotrexate used as a chemotherapeutic agent (cancer treatment). It is also used to treat megaloblastic anemias due to folate deficiency, as in sprue and other nutritional deficiencies, and megaloblastic anemias of pregnancy and infancy. Leucovorin injectable is also used as a pre-treatment followed by fluorouracil to prolong survival in the palliative treatment of patients with advanced colorectal cancer. It may also have other uses.

WARNING: Leucovorin Injection should only be given by intramuscular or intravenous injection and must not be administered intrathecally. It should only be used with 5-fluorouracil or methotrexate under the direct supervision of a clinician experienced in the use of cancer chemotherapeutic agents. Patients receiving any combination therapy regimen involving Leucovorin Calcium Injection and fluorouracil should be carefully monitored for diarrhea and/or stomatitis/mucositis as these are the first indications that severe and potentially lifethreatening toxicity could develop Leucovorin Calcium Injection may diminish the effect of anti-epileptic substances such as phenobarbital, primidone and phenytoin. During Leucovorin Calcium Injection administration in epileptic patients treated with these substances, there is a risk to increase the frequency of seizures. In addition to its desired action, Leucovorin (Leucovorin) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause fatigue, lethargy (a lack of energy and enthusiasm), infection. It may cause alopecia (hair loss), hypersensitivity reaction. It may cause nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to leucovorin or any component of the formulation, pernicious anemia (a deficiency in the production of red blood cells through a lack of vitamin B12) Taking Leucovorin (Leucovorin) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Leucovorin (Leucovorin) requires regular monitoring by a doctor.
