Description
Mezavant (Mesalazine) is an anti-inflammatory agent. It is typically used for the treatment and maintenance of remission of mildly to moderately active ulcerative colitis (an inflammation in your digestive tract) by adults. It may also have other uses.

Mezavant (Mesalazine) is usually given four times a day. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. Administer with or without food. WARNING: Use with caution in patients predisposed to cardiac (heart) allergic reactions. Monitor for signs and symptoms of hypersensitivity (allergy), discontinue treatment for mesalamine-induced hypersensitivity (allergy reactions). Use with caution in patients with pre-existing skin conditions, avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight and ultraviolet light. Liver failure has been reported, kidney impairment has been reported. Good hydration is recommended. Use with caution in the elderly patients >65 years of age because it may lead to blood cell disturbances. Use with caution in patients with kidney and liver impairment. These events may occur at anytime during therapy and without warning. In addition to its desired action, Mezavant (Mesalazine) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause stomach pain, constipation and eructation (the release of air or gas from the stomach or esophagus (swallowing tube) through the mouth). It may cause headaches and nasopharyngitis (known as a cold, refer to swelling of the nasal passages and the back of the throat). Contraindications: Hypersensitivity (severe allergic reactions) to mesalamine, aminosalicylates, salicylates (such as aspirin), or any component of the formulation, severe kidney and liver impairment. Existing gastric (stomach ulcer, a sore on the lining of your stomach, small intestine or esophagus, urinary tract obstruction), use in children <2 years of age. Taking Mezavant (Mesalazine) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Mezavant (Mesalazine) requires regular monitoring by a doctor.
