Description

Nardil (Phenelzine) is an antidepressant. It is typically used to treat symptoms of depression that may include feelings of sadness, fear, anxiety, or worry about physical health. It may also have other uses.

Additional information

Nardil (Phenelzine) is typically used once to three times daily. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you forget a dose, contact your pharmacist. Avoid tyramine-containing foods/beverages during therapy and for 2 weeks after discontinuing phenelzine. Examples include cheeses, yogurt, high protein food that has undergone protein breakdown by aging, fermentation, pickling, smoking, or bacterial contamination, meat extract, pickled herring, liver, yeast extract, dry sausage, fava or broad bean pods, beer, wine, sauerkraut, excessive amount or caffeine and/or chocolate. Avoid any spoiled or improperly refrigerated, handled, or stored protein rich foods (e.g., meat, fish and dairy products)
WARNING: Use with caution in patients with diabetes mellitus, angle-closure glaucoma (eye problem). Use with caution in patients at risk for seizures (abnormal electrical activity in the brain), including those with a history of seizures. Use with caution in patients with hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid, a gland in the neck) In addition to its desired action, Nardil (Phenelzine) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause dizziness, drowsiness, weakness, sleep problems (insomnia)
It may cause constipation, upset stomach, dry mouth,
It may cause decreased urination, impotence, and difficulty having an orgasm
Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to phenelzine or any component of the formulation, heart problems, pheochromocytoma (tumor that develops in an adrenal gland, found on top of the kidneys), liver disease or history of liver disease, renal (kidney) disease. Avoid concurrent use of bupropion, buspirone, caffeine (excessive used), alcohol, cocaine, dextromethorphan, elective surgery requiring general anesthesia (discontinue phenelzine ≥10 days prior to elective surgery), guanethidine, meperidine, amitriptyline, clomipramine, desipramine, imipramine, nortriptyline, protriptyline, doxepin, carbamazepine, cyclobenzaprine, amoxapine, maprotiline, perphenazine, trimipramine, ophthalmic agents (e.g., apraclonidine), spinal anesthesia, amphetamines, methylphenidate, dopamine, norepinephrine, levodopa, methyldopa, phenylalanine, tryptophan, tyrosine, or foods high in tyramine content (or within 2 weeks of stopping treatment). Foods high in tyramine or dopamine content, foods and/or supplements containing tyrosine, phenylalanine, tryptophan, or caffeine should not be taken.
Taking Nardil (Phenelzine) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.
A treatment with Nardil (Phenelzine) requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.Nardil (Phenelzine)
