Description

Parnate (Tranylcypromine) is an antidepressant agent. It is typically used to treat certain types of depression with moderate-to-severe symptoms. It may also have other uses.

Additional information

Parnate (Tranylcypromine)'s dosage depends on the condition, it is usually given twice a day in the usual range (10 mg - 60 mg). However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. Administer with or without food. Avoid tyramine containing food like: dairy products, fat unless fermented, soups, sweets and desserts.
WARNING: This medication may affect the mental or physical abilities needed to drive or operate machinery. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous tasks until you have determined how Parnate (Tranylcypromine) affects you. This medication may cause decreased blood glucose for people with diabetes, use with caution in diabetics. This medication can mask the pain of angina that might warn of a heart attack. If you have heart disease or are at risk for developing heart disease, discuss with your doctor how Parnate (Tranylcypromine) may affect your medical condition. People over the age of 60 may be at an increased risk of severe side effects from Parnate (Tranylcypromine), use with caution in elderly.
In addition to its desired action, Parnate (Tranylcypromine) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause edema (water retention), orthostatic hypotension (low blood pressure), palpitations (feelings or sensations that your heart is pounding or racing), tachycardia (high heart rate). It may cause agitation, anxiety, chills, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, insomnia: difficulty sleeping, restlessness.
It may cause abdominal pain, anorexia (weight loss), constipation, diarrhea, nausea, and xerostomia (dry mouth resulting from reduced or absent saliva flow).
It may cause sexual disorders, blurred vision, tremor, weakness and muscle spasm.
Contraindications: Pheochromocytoma (benign tumor that lead to high blood pressure), concurrent use or use in rapid succession with certain antihistamine medications, other antidepressants. Hypersensitivity to tranylcypromine or any component of the formulations, heart disorders (e.g., arteriosclerosis, hypertension), history of recurrent or frequent headaches, liver damage, foods and beverages with high tyramine content.
Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.
A treatment with Parnate (Tranylcypromine) requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.Parnate (Tranylcypromine)
