Description
Proctol Ointment (Hydrocortisone Framycetin Dibucaine Esculin) is a combination of agents used to treat the pain and inflammation of hemorrhoids (swollen veins in the lower rectum). The rectum is the last several inches of the large intestine. It may also have other uses.

Proctol Ointment (Hydrocortisone Framycetin Dibucaine Esculin) is typically applied in a small quantity in the morning, in the evening, and after every bowel movement. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. For the treatment of the outside area of the anus, apply a small quantity. For an internal application, attach the rectal cannula (the plastic attachment that is included with the medication) to the tube opening, gently insert to the full extent inside the anus, and squeeze the tube gently from the lower end while withdrawing. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. WARNING: Overusing this product may cause an overgrowth of bacteria that will not be killed. This means that This medication or other medications containing framycetin sulfate may not work for you in the future. Prolonged use of Proctol Ointment (Hydrocortisone Framycetin Dibucaine Esculin) or applying it to open skin or wounds could promote the absorption of Proctol Ointment (Hydrocortisone Framycetin Dibucaine Esculin) into the blood circulation. This can produce effects similar to those seen after taking oral corticosteroid medications for long periods of time (symptoms could include depression, headache, mood swings, rounding of the face). In addition to its desired action, Proctol Ointment (Hydrocortisone Framycetin Dibucaine Esculin) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause discomfort, irritation, or pain of the anus or rectum. It may cause burning or irritation at the site of application. It may cause a rash. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to any ingredient found in Proctol ointments. People with tuberculosis (a bacterial infection), fungal or viral infections should not use this product. Taking Proctol Ointment (Hydrocortisone Framycetin Dibucaine Esculin) during pregnancy may be harmful to the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method.
