Description
Salagen (Pilocarpine) is a cholinomimetic agent. It is typically used to treat symptoms of dry mouth that occur when radiation therapy to the head and neck causes reduced function of the salivary glands. It is also used to treat dry mouth and dry eyes that are symptoms of Sjogren’s syndrome. Sjogren’s syndrome is a condition where the body’s defenses attack and damage the glands that produce saliva and tears. It may also have other uses.

Salagen (Pilocarpine) is typically taken three or four times a day. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Do not take more than six tablets (30 mg) per day. Take Salagen with or without food. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. WARNING: This medication may cause the muscles in to tighten, in the walls of the small air passages in the lungs, narrowing the air passages and making it more difficult to breathe. If you have breathing problems such as asthma or COPD, discuss with your doctor how Salagen (Pilocarpine) may affect your medical condition. People taking Salagen (Pilocarpine) may be at an increased risk of feeling agitated (restless, anxious, aggressive, emotional, and feeling not like themselves), especially people who are taking medications for mental health conditions like depression. This medication may cause blurred vision, particularly at night. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous tasks until you have determined how Salagen (Pilocarpine) affects you. Use with caution in patients with kidney, liver, or heart disease. In addition to its desired action, Salagen (Pilocarpine) may cause some side effects, notably It may cause mild to moderate sweating, chills, dizziness, headaches, or flushing (redness in the face). It may cause nausea (feeling sick) and vomiting, diarrhea, passing urine more often, or problems with digestion. It may cause runny eyes or runny nose. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity (severe allergy) to pilocarpine or any component of the formulation, uncontrolled asthma, inflamed iris (the coloured part of the eye), narrow angle glaucoma. Taking Salagen (Pilocarpine) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. There is no available data regarding the harm of Salagen (Pilocarpine) for the fetus, therefore it is not recommended to use it. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Salagen (Pilocarpine) requires regular monitoring by a doctor.
