Description

Septra (Trimethoprim Sulfamethoxazole) is a combination of antibiotics. It is typically used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections (such as middle ear, urine, respiratory, and intestinal infections). It is also used to prevent and treat a certain type of pneumonia (infection of the lungs). It may also have other uses.

Additional information

Septra (Trimethoprim Sulfamethoxazole)'s dosage depends on your medical condition, weight, and response to treatment. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. The solution should be given by intravenous infusion over a period of 60 to 90 minute by your doctor. Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim injection should not be given intramuscularly. WARNING: Use with caution in patients with allergies or asthma (a respiratory condition marked by attacks of spasm in the bronchi of the lungs, causing difficulty in breathing), liver impairment, renal (kidney) impairment, dosage adjustment recommended. Use with caution in patients with thyroid (gland in the neck) dysfunction, in elderly patients, greater risk for more severe adverse reactions. Use with caution in patients with potential folate deficiency. Prolonged use may result in additional infection.
In addition to its desired action, Septra (Trimethoprim Sulfamethoxazole) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite.
It may cause allergic skin reactions such as rash. It may cause liver injury, increased in potassium levels, low blood sugar levels, low sodium levels. It may cause painful or swollen tongue, dizziness, ringing in your ears, tired feeling, or sleep problems (insomnia).
Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim, or any component of the formulation, history of drug induced-immune thrombocytopenia (disorder that can lead to easy or excessive bruising and bleeding) with use of the drug, infants <2 months, infants <4 weeks, marked hepatic (liver) damage or severe renal (kidney) disease, concomitant administration with dofetilide.
Taking Septra (Trimethoprim Sulfamethoxazole) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby especially during the first trimester of pregnancy because of the antifolate effect. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. There is no available data regarding the harm of Septra (Trimethoprim Sulfamethoxazole) for the fetus, therefore it is not recommended to use it.
