Description

Slynd (Drospirenone) is a birth control agent. It is typically used to prevent pregnancy in girls and adult women aged 12 years and older who can become pregnant. It may also have other uses.

Additional information

Slynd (Drospirenone) is usually taken once daily at the same time each day. However, your doctor or pharmacist may recommend a different schedule that suits you better. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product or take it more often than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. It can be taken with or without food. Start Slynd (Drospirenone) on the first day (Day 1) of your period. Take one white pill each day for 24 consecutive days. Finish all the white pills first. Then, take one green pill each day for four consecutive days. Your period should begin during this time. Take one pill daily in the order shown on the blister pack, at the same time each day, for 28 days. After finishing the last pill on Day 28 from the pack, start the first white pill (Day 1) from a new pack at your usual time the next day. Continue with this schedule for each pack of SLYND. Take the first pill from the new pack, whether or not you are bleeding.

WARNING: Some studies have suggested the possibility of a link between birth control pills and breast cancer, but nothing conclusive has been found involving this medication. If you are taking birth control pills, you should learn how to do a breast self-exam. Notify your doctor of any unusual changes. A yearly clinical breast examination is also recommended. Women who use birth control that contains hormones could develop blood clots in the lower leg, thigh, or pelvis. There is more risk if you gave birth within 6 weeks or if you have a history of blood clots. If you have diabetes, you might have a higher chance of high blood sugar while taking Slynd (Drospirenone) for the first few months. Your healthcare professional will monitor your health during this time.

In addition to its desired action, this medication may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause headaches, changes in your menstrual periods, or vaginal bleeding between periods (spotting).
It may cause missed or irregular periods, nausea, and vomiting.
It may cause bloating, stomach cramps, breast pain, tenderness, swelling, nipple discharge, and fatigue.
It may cause irritability, decreased sex drive (libido), changes in weight or appetite, and mood swings.
It may cause freckles, darkening of facial skin, increased hair growth, and hair loss on the scalp.

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to the drug or any component of the formulation; have or have had kidney disease or kidney failure; have or have had reduced adrenal gland function; have or had cervical cancer or any cancer that is sensitive to progestin drugs; have or have had liver problems, including liver tumors/cancer; have or have had unexplained bleeding from your vagina.

Taking this medication during pregnancy may be harmful to the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy, become pregnant, or are breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.

A treatment with this medication requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to attend all regularly scheduled appointments with your doctor.

Warning

Each person may react differently to a treatment. If you think this medication may be causing side effects (including those described here, or others), talk to your doctor or pharmacist. He or she can help you to determine whether or not the medication is the source of the problem.
