Description
Solystat (Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate) is a potassium-removing agent. It is usually used to treat high levels of potassium in the blood, also called hyperkalemia. It may also have other uses.

Solystat (Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate) is typically used one to four times daily (for oral use) or once or twice daily (for rectal use). However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you forget a dose, contact your pharmacist. For oral use: Powder for Suspension is usually given by mouth mixed in a small amount of water. It can also be mixed with food or sweetened liquid. Do NOT mix SOLYSTAT with orange juice or fruit juice which contains potassium. For rectal use: Rectal dosing only applies to SOLYSTAT Powder for Suspension. The enema (a procedure in which liquid or gas is injected into the rectum, the final section of the large intestine, terminating at the anus) is usually given by a doctor or nurse. WARNING: Use with caution in patients with patients with cardiovascular (heart) problems. Use with caution in patients with hepatic (liver) problems. Use with caution in patients with edema (swelling caused by excess fluid trapped in your body's tissues). In addition to its desired action, Solystat (Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause hypernatremia (high sodium levels), hypocalcemia (low calcium levels), hypokalemia (low potassium levels), hypomagnesemia (low magnesium levels). It may cause constipation, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting. It may cause abdominal pain, allergic reaction. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to sodium polystyrene sulfonate, similar agents or any component of the formulation, hypokalemia (low blood potassium), obstructive bowel disease (a blockage that keeps food or liquid from passing through your small intestine or large intestine), neonates (newborn) with reduced stomach motility, oral administration in neonates. Taking Solystat (Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Solystat (Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate) requires regular monitoring by a doctor.
