Description
Uromitexan (Mesna) is a chemoprotective agent. It is typically used to protect the bladder against some of the harmful effects of certain cancer medications (e.g., cyclophosphamide, ifosfamide). It may also have other uses.
Additional information
Uromitexan (Mesna)'s dosage is usually 20% of the dose of cyclophosphamide, or 10 mg to 12 mg per kilogram of body weight if ifosfamide is used. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. MESNA is injected into a vein through a specially prepared site on your skin. The injection is given at the time of a cyclophosphamide dose injection, then 4 and 8 hours later. WARNING: MESNA may cause drowsiness or dizziness, affecting your ability to drive or operate machinery. MESNA is intended for the prevention of hemorrhagic cystitis (severe inflammation of the bladder resulting in bleeding) and will not prevent or alleviate other toxicities associated with ifosfamide or cyclophosphamide. In addition to its desired action, Uromitexan (Mesna) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. It may cause flushing, headache, lightheadedness, skin rash, and unusually sleepy during the day. It may cause redness or irritation at the infusion site. It may cause fast heart rate, flu-like symptoms (e.g., sore throat, fever, chills, shivering, cough, body aches), and severe dizziness. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to MESNA or any component of the formulation. Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Uromitexan (Mesna) requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.Uromitexan (Mesna)
