Description
Xylac (Loxapine) is an antipsychotic agent. It is typically used to treat schizophrenia (a serious mental disorder in which people interpret reality abnormally). It may also have other uses.
Additional information
Xylac (Loxapine) is typically used two to four times daily. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. This drug should be taken with a full glass of water. Take it with or without food. WARNING: Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular (heart) problems. Use with caution in patients at risk of seizures (a sudden, uncontrolled electrical disturbance in the brain). This drug is not approved to treat mental problems caused by dementia (a general term for the impaired ability to remember, think, or make decisions that interferes with doing everyday activities). In addition to its desired action, Xylac (Loxapine) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause changes to menstrual periods, changed interest in sexual activity, confusion, constipation, dizziness. It may cause dry mouth, itchy skin, enlargement of breasts (men and women), headache, nasal congestion. It may cause nausea, increased sweating, trouble sleeping, weakness, weight changes, vomiting. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to loxapine or any component of the formulation, severe drug-induced central nervous system depression (drugs that slow brain activity), coma (state of prolonged unconsciousness). Taking Xylac (Loxapine) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Xylac (Loxapine) requires regular monitoring by a doctor.
