Description

Ziagen (Abacavir) is an antiviral agent. It is typically used to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), a virus that attacks the body’s immune system. If HIV is not treated, it can lead to AIDS. It may also have other uses.

Additional information

Ziagen (Abacavir) is typically used twice daily. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. May be administered with or without food.

WARNING: Serious and sometimes fatal hypersensitivity reactions have occurred.

In addition to its desired action, Ziagen (Abacavir) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause headaches, fatigue, or malaise.
It may cause nausea. 
It may cause abnormal dreams, sleep disorders, chills, migraines (headaches that can cause severe throbbing pain or a pulsing sensation), depression, dizziness, or anxiety. 
It may cause a skin rash.

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to abacavir or any component of the formulation, patients who are positive for the HLA-B*5701 allele (genetic predisposition which causes hypersensitivity reactions to abacavir), moderate to severe hepatic (liver) impairment.

Taking Ziagen (Abacavir) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.

A treatment with Ziagen (Abacavir) requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.Ziagen (Abacavir)
