Description

Zometa Concentrate (Zoledronic Acid) is an antiosteoporotic agent. It is used to treat high levels of calcium in the blood that may be caused by certain types of cancer. Zometa is also used along with cancer chemotherapy to treat bone damage caused by multiple myeloma [cancer that begins in the plasma cells (white blood cells that produce substances needed to fight infection)] or by cancer that began in another part of the body but has spread to the bones. Zoledronic acid (Zometa) is not cancer chemotherapy, and it will not slow or stop the spread of cancer. However, it can be used to treat bone disease in patients who have cancer. It may also have other uses.

Additional information

Zometa Concentrate (Zoledronic Acid)'s dosage depends on the condition. Your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a schedule that is more appropriate for you. This medicine is given through a needle placed in one of your veins. The medicine must be injected slowly, so your IV ( intravenous) tube will need to stay in place for at least 15 minutes. Your doctor or nurse will administer Zometa Concentrate (Zoledronic Acid) to you in a hospital or clinical setting. Be sure to drink at least 2 glasses of water or another liquid within a few hours before you receive zoledronic acid.

WARNING: There is evidence that long term use of this class of medication may contribute to a type of rare fracture of the long bone in the thigh (femur). If you experience new or unusual pain in the groin, hip, or thigh area, contact your doctor as soon as possible. Before starting zoledronic acid, people who have low blood calcium levels must adjust their levels with calcium and vitamin D supplements as recommended by their doctors. Your doctor may recommend that you continue to take calcium and vitamin D while you are receiving zoledronic. This medication may cause decreases in blood calcium levels, which can be life-threatening when severely low. If you experience muscle spasms or muscle pain, irregular heart beat or seizures, contact your doctor immediately.

In addition to its desired action, Zometa Concentrate (Zoledronic Acid) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause abdominal pain, back pain, bone or joint pain, constipation, decreased appetite, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting.
It may cause dizziness, excessive sweating, fever and chills, headache, stuffy nose, or sore throat.
It may cause skin reaction at the injection site (e.g., redness, swelling or pain), rash, tiredness, or weakness.

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to zoledronic acid or any component of the formulation or any other bisphosphonate (same class) medication (e.g., alendronate, etidronate). Do not use in case of severely decreased kidney function, or low blood calcium levels that have not been corrected.

Taking Zometa Concentrate (Zoledronic Acid) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.

A treatment with Zometa Concentrate (Zoledronic Acid) requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.Zometa Concentrate (Zoledronic Acid)
