Zomig (Zolmitriptan)

Additional information

Zomig (Zolmitriptan) is typically used as a single dose into one nostril. If your headache comes back after your initial dose, a second dose may be administered anytime after 2 hours of administering the first dose. Do not administer more than a total of 10 mg of ZOMIG in any 24-hour period However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. The nasal spray should be administered into one nostril only. The device is a single dose unit and must not be primed before use. Patients should be advised to read the consumer information leaflet regarding the use of the nasal spray device prior to administration.

WARNING: Use with caution in patients with hepatic (liver) impairment. Elderly patients are more likely to have underlying heart disease and liver or kidney impairment, use with caution. Heart evaluation is recommended for elderly patients with other cardiovascular risk factors prior to initiation of therapy. Only indicated for acute treatment of migraine headaches, not indicated for migraine prevention. These events may occur at anytime during therapy and without warning.


In addition to its desired action, Zomig (Zolmitriptan) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause unpleasant taste, edema (water retention), orthostatic hypotension (low blood pressure), palpitations (a noticeably rapid, strong, or irregular heartbeat due to agitation, exertion, or illness), tachycardia (high heart rate). 
It may cause agitation, anxiety, chills, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, insomnia (difficulty sleeping), restlessness, and chest pain.
It may cause abdominal pain, anorexia, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, and xerostomia (dry mouth resulting from reduced or absent saliva flow).
It may cause sexual disorders, blurred vision, tremor, weakness and muscle spasm (contractions).


Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to zolmitriptan or any component of the formulation. Several heart diseases, ophthalmic migraine (high pressure in the eye). 

Taking Zomig (Zolmitriptan) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant, contact your family doctor.
