Description

Leucovorin (Leucovorin) is an antidote agent (agent that neutralizes the effects of another drug or a poison). It is typically used to prevent harmful effects of methotrexate used as a chemotherapeutic agent (cancer treatment). It is also used to treat certain anemias (when your body does not have enough functional red blood cells) due to folate deficiency, such as in sprue, nutritional deficiency, and certain types of anemia that can happen during pregnancy and infancy. It may also have other uses.

Leucovorin (Leucovorin)'s dosage depends on the condition being treated. Your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a schedule that is more appropriate for you. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you forget a dose, contact your pharmacist. Take Leucovorin (Leucovorin) by mouth with or without food. Do not administer orally in the presence of nausea or vomiting.

WARNING: Leucovorin should only be used with 5-fluorouracil or methotrexate under the direct supervision of a healthcare professional experienced in the use of anti-cancer medicines. This medication can cause serious side effects. In some cases these side effects have been fatal:
- Severe skin reactions: These include Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN) and are more likely to occur if you are taking other medicines that are also known to cause these reactions.
- Gastrointestinal toxicity: Inflammation and ulceration of the mucous membranes lining the digestive tract.
- Bone marrow suppression: Large decrease in the production of blood cells and platelets by the bone marrow.
- Serious allergic reactions

In addition to its desired action, Leucovorin (Leucovorin) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause fatigue, lethargy (a lack of energy and enthusiasm), infection.
It may cause alopecia (hair loss), hypersensitivity reaction.
It may cause nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation.

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to leucovorin or any component of the formulation, pernicious anemia (a deficiency in the production of red blood cells through a lack of vitamin B12).

Taking Leucovorin (Leucovorin) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.
