Description

Eltroxin (Levothyroxine) is a hormonal agent. It is typically used for the treatment of hypothyroidism (a condition in which your thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough of certain crucial hormones). It may also have other uses.

Additional information

Eltroxin (Levothyroxine) is typically used once daily. The dose of these medicines will be different for different patients. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you forget a dose, contact your pharmacist. Administer consistently in the morning on an empty stomach, at least 30 to 60 minutes before food. Alternatively, may consistently administer at night 3 to 4 hours after the last meal. Do not administer within 4 hours of calcium- or iron-containing products or bile acid sequestrants (like cholestyramine, colestipol, and colesevelam). Administer with a full glass of water. May be crushed and suspended in 5 to 10 mL of water, suspension should be used immediately.
WARNING: Use should be avoided in postmenopausal women, elderly patients, patients with heart disease, osteoporosis (bone disease), large thyroid nodules or long-standing goiters (abnormal enlargement of your thyroid gland). Use with caution in patients with diabetes mellitus. Use with caution in patients with adrenal insufficiency (occurs when the adrenal glands, glands on top of kidneys don't make enough of the hormone cortisol)
In addition to its desired action, Eltroxin (Levothyroxine) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause increased appetite, weight loss, heat sensitivity, excessive sweating, headache, hyperactivity
It may cause nervousness, anxiety, irritability, mood swings, trouble sleeping, tiredness

It may cause diarrhea, vomiting, stomach cramps
Contraindications: Uncorrected adrenal insufficiency (when the adrenal glands don't make enough of the hormone cortisol), untreated subclinical thyrotoxicosis (low levels of thyroid, a gland in the neck, stimulating hormone). Hypersensitivity to levothyroxine, glycerol or any component of the formulation. Adequate and well-controlled studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus in the first trimester of pregnancy (and there is no evidence of risk in later trimesters). If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.
A treatment with Eltroxin (Levothyroxine) requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.Eltroxin (Levothyroxine)
