Salofalk (Mesalamine)

Additional information

Salofalk (Mesalamine) is typically given once a day at bedtime. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Lie on your left side with your right knee bent. Gently insert the lubricated applicator tip into the rectum, pointed slightly toward the navel (umbilicus). Grasp the bottle firmly, then tilt slightly so that the nozzle is aimed toward the back, and squeeze slowly to instill the medication. Remain in this position for at least 30 minutes to allow a thorough distribution of the medication internally. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you forget a dose, contact your pharmacist. 

WARNING: Salofalk may cause an "acute intolerance syndrome" (characterized by cramping, abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea), which may be hard to discern from an exacerbation of the disease. Use with caution in patients with kidney disease and in elderly patients. 

In addition to its desired action, Salofalk (Mesalamine) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause stomach pain or cramps, gas, nausea, or vomiting.
It may cause an increased urge to go to the bathroom, irritation of the rectal area, or diarrhea. 
It may cause back pain, blood pressure changes, fatigue, or tiredness. 
It may cause acne, hair loss, or headaches. 

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to mesalamine, aminosalicylates, salicylates such as aspirin, or any component of the formulation.

Taking Salofalk (Mesalamine) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.
