Description
Neulasta (Pegfilgrastim) helps the bone marrow produce white blood cells which help the body fight infections. It is typically used to prevent infections caused by febrile neutropenia in people receiving a type of chemotherapy that slows down white blood cell production. Febrile neutropenia is a common complication of cancer therapy, characterized by a reduction in neutrophils (a type of white blood cell) below normal counts and a fever. It may also have other uses.

Neulasta (Pegfilgrastim) is typically given once by subcutaneous (under the skin) injection after each cycle of chemotherapy. Pegfilgrastim should not be given less than 14 days before chemotherapy and not until 24 hours after chemotherapy. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Pegfilgrastim is usually given under medical supervision. WARNING: Some people with breast or lung cancer who received Pegfilgrastim may have an increased risk of myelodysplasia (a type of rare blood cancer where you don't have enough healthy blood cells) and certain types of leukemia (blood cancer). It has been reported to cause "capillary leak syndrome" (CLS), a condition where blood leaks out of the small blood vessels into the tissues of the body. This medication may cause an enlarged spleen, and there have been reports of the spleen rupturing. It may cause heart-related conditions such as heart attacks and abnormal heart rhythms. In addition to its desired action, Neulasta (Pegfilgrastim) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause mild-to-moderate bone or muscle pains or aches. It may cause reactions at the injection site (e.g., redness, swelling, or itching). It may cause chest pain, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, or shortness of breath. Contraindications: History of serious allergic reactions to Pegfilgrastim, filgrastim, or any component of the formulation. Taking Neulasta (Pegfilgrastim) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Neulasta (Pegfilgrastim) requires regular monitoring by a doctor.
