Description
Prevnar 13 (Pneumococcal 13 Vaccine Conjugate) used to prevent pneumonia (lung infection), meningitis (brain lining infection), pleural empyema (pus buildup in the space between the lung and the chest wall), bacteremia (bacterial blood infection), and sepsis (a life-threatening infection causing rapid breathing and heart rate, organ shutdown, and dangerously low blood pressure) caused by various types of pneumococcal bacteria.

Prevnar 13 (Pneumococcal 13 Vaccine Conjugate) is typically administered once for children above 6 years of age, adolescents, and adults, infants and children typically receive three to four shots. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. It will be given to you by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinical setting. Prevnar 13 is injected into the leg or arm muscle. If you forget a dose, contact your pharmacist. WARNING: Prevnar 13 will only protect against disease caused by the types of Streptococcus pneumoniae (bacteria) in the vaccine. As with any vaccine, prevnar 13 will not protect 100% of those who receive the vaccine. There is a risk of increased bleeding or bruising when any intramuscular (in the muscle) injection is given to a person who has a bleeding disorder or is taking medications to thin the blood. In addition to its desired action, this medication may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause a decreased appetite, diarrhea, headache, fever of less than 39°C, and vomiting. It may cause reaction at place of injection such as a hard lump, pain, redness, soreness, swelling. It may cause drowsiness, fatigue, muscle or joint pain, irritability, and restless sleep. It may cause increased crying (infants). Contraindications: Severe allergic reaction to pneumococcal vaccine, any component of the formulation, or any diphtheria (bacteria) toxoid-containing vaccine. Taking this medication during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product.
