Description

Pneumovax 23 (Pneumococcal Vaccine Polyvalent) used to protect against bacteria known as Pneumococci. It is typically used to prevent infections, such as pneumonia and bacteremia (severe infection in the blood), caused by certain types of the pneumococcal bacteria.

Additional information

Pneumovax 23 (Pneumococcal Vaccine Polyvalent) is typically administered once. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. It is injected either under the skin (subcutaneous) or into a muscle (intramuscular) (preferably in the upper, outer arm or thigh). It will be given to you by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinical setting. If you forget a dose, contact your pharmacist. A second dose of Pneumovax 23 is not routinely recommended. However, for persons at the highest risk of serious pneumococcal infection, a second dose of the vaccine may be recommended. Pneumovax 23 can be used in children 2 years of age and older. It is not recommended for use in children below 2 years of age.

WARNING: Like all vaccines, pneumovax 23 may not fully protect 100% of those who get the vaccine. People cannot get pneumococcal infections from . Use with caution in patients receiving anticoagulant (blood thinning) therapy, bleeding/hematoma (collection of blood outside the blood vessel) may occur from the administration. Use with caution in patients with heart or lung disease.

In addition to its desired action, this medication may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause reaction at place of injection such as redness, soreness, hard lump, swelling, and pain.
It may cause fainting, mild or high fever, aches or pain in joints or muscles, and chills. 
It may cause altered skin sensation, decreased ability to move limbs, headache, swollen glands, and rash. 

Contraindications: Severe allergic reaction to pneumococcal vaccine or any component of the formulation.

Taking this medication during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.
