Description
Rabavert (Rabies Inactivated Vaccine) used to prevent (pre-exposure) rabies. Rabies is a deadly virus that spreads to people from the saliva of infected animals and attacks the brain of the host. It is also used following exposure to rabies in an attempt to block or reduce the infection (post-exposure prophylaxis). Rabavert may be administered to all age groups.

Rabavert (Rabies Inactivated Vaccine) is typically administered three times as a pre-exposure vaccination dose, followed by one additional booster dose (a supplementary dose). It will be given to you by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinical setting. Rabavert is injected into the leg or arm muscle. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. If rabies exposure occurs in a previously vaccinated person, then that person should receive two IM (into the muscle) doses of Rabavert: one dose immediately and one 3 days later. If you forget a dose, contact your pharmacist. WARNING: This vaccine may cause anaphylaxis (severe allergy) and neuroparalytic events (paralysis or loss of sensation) such as encephalitis (swelling or inflammation of the brain), transient paralysis (all or some muscle control in any part of the body comes and goes periodically), and Guillain-Barré-Syndrome (when the body's immune system attacks the nerves). Like all vaccines, Rabavert may not fully protect 100% of those who get the vaccine. Use with caution in patients receiving anticoagulant (blood thinning) therapy, bleeding/hematoma (collection of blood outside the blood vessel) may occur from the administration. In addition to its desired action, this medication may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause headaches, nausea, or generally feeling unwell. It may cause pain, redness, or firmness at injection site. It may cause muscle pain, joint pain, or fever. Contraindications: Severe hypersensitivity or allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to rabies vaccine or any component of the formulation. Taking this medication during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. There is no available data regarding the harm of this medication for the fetus, therefore it is not recommended to use it.
