Description

Xeljanz XR (Tofacitinib extended-release) is antirheumatic agent. It is typically used for the treatment of adult patients with rheumatoid arthritis (disease that can cause joint pain, inflammation, and damage throughout your body). It is also used for the treatment of adult patients with psoriatic arthritis (a condition involving joint inflammation that usually occurs in combination with a skin disorder called psoriasis). It may also have other uses.

Additional information

Xeljanz XR (Tofacitinib extended-release) is typically used once daily. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. May be taken with or without food.

WARNING: Inform patients that XELJANZ/XELJANZ XR may lower the ability of their immune system to fight infections. Advise patients not to start taking XELJANZ/XELJANZ XR if they have an active infection. Instruct patients to contact their healthcare provider immediately during treatment if symptoms suggesting infection appear in order to ensure rapid evaluation and appropriate treatment. Use with caution in patients with diabetes (a disease that occurs when your blood sugar is too high). Use with caution in patients who may be at increased risk for gastrointestinal perforation (a hole in the wall of the stomach, small intestine, or large bowel). Use with caution in elderly patients.

In addition to its desired action, Xeljanz XR (Tofacitinib extended-release) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause infection, nasopharyngitis (inflammation of the nose and pharynx), skin rash, upper respiratory tract infections. 
It may cause diarrhea, high blood pressure, skin rash, vomiting, increased cholesterol level.

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to tofacitinib or any component of the formulation, severe hepatic (liver) impairment.

Taking Xeljanz XR (Tofacitinib extended-release) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. 

A treatment with Xeljanz XR (Tofacitinib extended-release) requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.Xeljanz XR (Tofacitinib extended-release)
