Description
Panectyl (Trimeprazine) is an antihistamine agent. It is typically used for itching. It may also be used to relieve a cough. It may also have other uses.
Additional information
Panectyl (Trimeprazine) is usually given two to three times a day. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. Administer with or without food. WARNING: Use with caution in patients with liver impairment and jaundice (a medical condition with yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes). Use with caution in patients at risk of seizures (a burst of uncontrolled electrical activity between brain cells). Use with caution in elderly patients, may be at increased risk for developing adverse effects. Parkinsonism (a condition that causes a combination of the movement abnormalities seen in Parkinson's disease (a progressive nervous system disorder that affects movement), may occur weeks or months after therapy initiation in adults and the elderly). In addition to its desired action, Panectyl (Trimeprazine) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause cardiac arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat), and other heart complications. It may cause depression, drowsiness (dose related), mood elevation and nightmares. It may cause abdominal pain, nausea, jaundice and nasal blockage. It may cause xerostomia (a condition in which the salivary glands in your mouth don't make enough saliva to keep your mouth wet). Contraindications: History of severe allergic reaction to trimeprazine, any component of the formulation, or other phenothiazines (similar agents), history of blood dyscrasias (an abnormal or disordered state of the body or of a bodily part), related to trimeprazine or other phenothiazines, states of brain depression due to alcohol, analgesics and certain opioid medications (painkillers). Trimeprazine is contraindicated for use in children less than two years of age. Taking Panectyl (Trimeprazine) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Panectyl (Trimeprazine) requires regular monitoring by a doctor.
