Description

Visudyne (Verteporfine) is a macular degeneration agent. It is typically used to treat blood vessel disorders in the eye caused by age-related macular degeneration (disease that affects a person’s central vision) and other eye diseases. It may also have other uses.

Additional information

Visudyne (Verteporfine)'s dosage depends on condition/body surface area (usual dosage: 6 mg/m2). However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Your doctor will administer Visudyne (Verteporfine) to you in a hospital or clinical setting.
WARNING: Verteporfin can make you more sensitive to light. Avoid exposure of skin or eyes to direct sunlight or bright indoor light for 2 days after receiving verteporfin. If extravasation (the unintentional leakage of vesicant fluids or medications from the vein into the surrounding tissue) does occur, the infusion should be stopped immediately. In addition to its desired action, Visudyne (Verteporfine) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause chest and back pain, sleep disturbance, changes in vision.
It may cause injection site reactions such as pain, redness, swelling, bleeding, discoloration, or rash.
It may cause light sensitivity, nausea, weakness, high blood pessure, elevated liver enzymes. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to verteporfin or any component of the formulation, porphyria (group of disorders that result from a buildup of natural chemicals that produce porphyrin in your body), severe hepatic (liver) impairment.
Taking Visudyne (Verteporfine) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.
A treatment with Visudyne (Verteporfine) requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.Visudyne (Verteporfine)
