Description

Arixtra (Fondaparinux) is a blood thinner. It is typically used to treat blood clots in deep veins (deep vein thrombosis [DVT]) and in the lungs (pulmonary embolism [PE]), and to prevent blood clots in people who are undergoing certain types of surgery. It may also have other uses.

Additional information

Arixtra (Fondaparinux) is typically given once a day. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. It is injected under the skin (subcutaneously). Pinch a fold of skin in the lower (left or right) region of your abdomen. Choose a different injection site for each injection so that you are not always injecting the same area. While holding the skin fold, insert the entire needle into the skin fold at a 90° angle to the skin and depress the syringe plunger completely. Apply pressure to the injection site with the alcohol swab for 5 to 10 seconds. Do not rub the injection site. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist.

WARNING: This medication can increase the risk of unwanted or uncontrolled bleeding, particularly if you have a bleeding disorder, ulcers (sores) of the digestive system, or a recent episode of bleeding after brain, spine, or eye surgery. People who weight less than 50 kg may also have an increased risk of bleeding. The needle shield of the Prefilled Syringe contains dry natural latex rubber. If you are allergic to latex, this may cause an allergic reaction. Use with caution in patients with kidney or liver impairment, and elderly patients.

In addition to its desired action, Arixtra (Fondaparinux) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause pain, bruising, redness, and swelling at the injection site.
It may cause headaches, nausea, vomiting.
It may cause swelling of the hands/feet, or fever.

Contraindications: Serious hypersensitivity (e.g., angioedema (swelling), anaphylactoid/anaphylactic reactions (severe allergic reactions)) to fondaparinux or any component of the formulation. Patients with severe kidney impairment, body weight <50 kg (when use as a preventative medication), active major bleeding, bacterial endocarditis (bacterial infection of the inner layer of the heart or the heart valves), or thrombocytopenia (low platelet count) associated with a positive in vitro test for antiplatelet antibody in the presence of fondaparinux should not use Arixtra (Fondaparinux).

Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Pregnant women should not use this product in the third trimester. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.

A treatment with Arixtra (Fondaparinux) requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.Arixtra (Fondaparinux)
