Description
Banzel (Rufinamide) is an antiepileptic agent. It is typically used with other antiepileptic drugs to treat seizures (a sudden, abnormal electrical disturbance in the brain that can cause temporary changes in behavior, movements, feelings, and awareness) associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (a severe and chronic form of epilepsy that typically begins in early childhood, often between the ages of 2 and 5, and can persist into adulthood) in adults and children 4 years of age and older by decreasing the overall number and severity of seizures. It may also have other uses.

Banzel (Rufinamide) is usually given in two divided doses. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. Administer with food. WARNING: BEFORE you use BANZEL talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you: Have heart problems, have liver problems, have other medical problems, have or have had suicidal thoughts or actions, depression or mood problems. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, or think you might be pregnant, or intend to become pregnant while taking BANZEL, and if you are breast-feeding or plan to start breast-feeding while taking BANZEL. BANZEL may make certain types of birth control (i.e.,hormonal contraceptives) less effective. Stopping BANZEL suddenly can cause serious problems. Stopping a seizure medication suddenly in a patient who has epilepsy can cause seizures that will not stop (status epilepticus). It may cause you to feel sleepy, tired, weak, dizzy or have problems with coordination and walking. Do not drive, operate heavy machinery or do other dangerous activities until you know how BANZEL affects you. In addition to its desired action, this medication may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause headache, dizziness, tiredness It may cause sleepiness, nausea, vomiting Contraindications: Hypersensitivity (severe allergy) to any component of the formulation, you have a family history of a genetic condition called Familial Short QT syndrome that affects the electrical system of the heart. Taking this medication during pregnancy is contraindicated and harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with this medication requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.
