Description
Chloromycetin Succinate (Chloramphenicol) is an antibiotic. It is typically used to treat severe infections such as bacterial meningitis (infection and inflammation of the protective layers of the brain), bacteremia (presence of bacteria in the bloodstream), and cystic fibrosis exacerbations (an inherited disorder that causes severe damage to the lungs, digestive system and other organs). It may also have other uses.
Additional information
Chloromycetin Succinate (Chloramphenicol) is typically administered in divided doses every 6 hours. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. It will be given to you by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinical setting. It is injected only into the veins (intravenously IV). WARNING: Serious and fatal blood dyscrasias/abnormalities (e.g., aplastic anemia (when the body stops producing enough new blood cells), hypoplastic anemia (when the bone marrow producing new blood cells, contains only a few blood cells), thrombocytopenia (low platelet count), and granulocytopenia (a severely low level of white blood cells)) have occurred after both short-term and prolonged therapy. Do not use Chloromycetin Succinate (Chloramphenicol) for minor infections or when less potentially toxic agents are effective. It may cause a toxic and often-fatal reaction called Gray Syndrome, characterized by abdominal distention with or without vomiting, progressive pallid cyanosis (when a child stops breathing and turns blue in the face), and vasomotor collapse (failure of the circulation). Prolonged use may result in fungal or bacterial superinfections (a second infection superimposed on an earlier one). Use with caution in patients with kidney or liver impairment, adjusting the dose may be necessary. In addition to its desired action, Chloromycetin Succinate (Chloramphenicol) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause confusion, depression, or headache. It may cause fever, skin rash, or itchiness. It may cause nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, or diarrhea. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to chloramphenicol or any component of the formulation. Do not use as treatment of trivial or viral infections, or for bacterial prophylaxis (administration of antibiotics to prevent an infection). Taking Chloromycetin Succinate (Chloramphenicol) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Chloromycetin Succinate (Chloramphenicol) requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.Chloromycetin Succinate (Chloramphenicol)
