Description
Cytovene (Ganciclovir) is an antiviral agent. It is typically used for prevention of cytomegalovirus (a kind of herpesvirus which usually produces very mild symptoms in an infected person but may cause severe neurological damage in people with weakened immune systems and in the newborn) disease in adult transplant recipients at risk for cytomegalovirus disease. Treatment of cytomegalovirus retinitis in immunocompromised (low immunity) adult patients, including patients with AIDS (a disease in which there is a severe loss of the body’s cellular immunity, greatly lowering the resistance to infection and cancers). It may also have other uses.

Cytovene (Ganciclovir)'s dosage depends on the condition, it is usually given once daily. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. This medication will be given to you by a doctor or a nurse in a hospital or clinical setting. WARNING: Based on animal data, ganciclovir has the potential to cause birth defects and cancers in humans. Use with caution in patients with kidney and liver impairment. Ensure patients are adequately hydrated. Avoid rapid infusion. Pain may occur at injection site despite adequate dilution, infuse solution into veins with adequate blood flow. These events may occur at anytime during therapy and without warning. In addition to its desired action, Cytovene (Ganciclovir) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause hyperhidrosis (abnormally excessive sweating that's not necessarily related to heat or exercise), diarrhea, anorexia and vomiting. It may cause infection, retinal detachment, kidney problems and fever. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity or severe allergy to ganciclovir, valganciclovir, acyclovir, or any component of the formulation. Taking Cytovene (Ganciclovir) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Cytovene (Ganciclovir) requires regular monitoring by a doctor.
