Diovan HCT (Valsartan Hydrochlorothiazide)

Description

Diovan HCT (Valsartan Hydrochlorothiazide) is a combination of an antihypertensive agent (valsartan) and a water pill (hydrochlorothiazide). It is typically used for hypertension (high blood pressure). It may also have other uses.

Diovan HCT (Valsartan Hydrochlorothiazide) is typically taken once daily. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. It may be taken with or without food, but it should be taken the same way each day. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often than prescribed. Do not chew or crush Diovan HCT (Valsartan Hydrochlorothiazide). If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist.

WARNING: Valsartan can cause injury and death to the developing fetus. Angioedema, a serious allergic reaction that causes the area around the throat and tongue to swell, may occur with Valsartan (especially after the first dose). Use with caution in patients with kidney disease as it may worsen kidney function in patients with pre-existing kidney impairment. Use with caution in patients with unstented unilateral (one kidney) or bilateral (two kidneys) kidney artery stenosis (narrowing of the kidneys' arteries). Hydrochlorothiazide occasionally causes vision changes including increased eye pressure and myopia (nearsightedness).

In addition to its desired action, Diovan HCT (Valsartan Hydrochlorothiazide) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause back or leg pain, dizziness or lightheadedness when rising from a lying or sitting position (orthostatic hypotension), and drowsiness.
It may cause cough, diarrhea, difficulty sleeping, headache, and fatigue (unusual tiredness or weakness, sometimes sign of potassium loss).
It may cause decreased sexual ability, nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, and decreased blood pressure (hypotension).
It may cause restlessness, pins and needles sensation, and swollen glands (in mouth).

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to valsartan, hydrochlorothiazide, or any component of the formulation. The concomitant use with aliskiren in patients with diabetes mellitus is contraindicated. Do not use in case of anuria (failure of the kidneys to produce urine).

Taking Diovan HCT (Valsartan Hydrochlorothiazide) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.
