Description
Diovan (Valsartan) is an antihypertensive agent. It is typically used for hypertension (high blood pressure) and chronic heart failure or to reduce the risk of death after a heart attack. It may also have other uses.
Additional information
Diovan (Valsartan) is typically taken once or twice daily. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Valsartan may be taken with or without food, but it should be taken the same way each day. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often than prescribed. Do not chew or crush Diovan (Valsartan). If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. WARNING: Valsartan can cause injury and death to the developing fetus. Angioedema, a serious allergic reaction that causes the area around the throat and tongue to swell, may occur with Valsartan (especially after the first dose). Use with caution in patients with kidney disease as it may worsen kidney function in patients with pre-existing kidney impairment. Use with caution in patients with unstented unilateral (one kidney) or bilateral (two kidneys) kidney artery stenosis (narrowing of the kidneys' arteries). In addition to its desired action, Diovan (Valsartan) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause back or leg pain, dizziness or lightheadedness when rising from a lying or sitting position (orthostatic hypotension), and drowsiness. It may cause cough, diarrhea, difficulty sleeping, headache, and fatigue. It may cause decreased sexual ability, nausea, vomiting, and decreased blood pressure (hypotension). It may cause flu-like symptoms (sudden lack of energy, fever, cough, sore throat). Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to valsartan or any component of the formulation. The concomitant use with Aliskiren in patients with diabetes mellitus is contraindicated. Taking Diovan (Valsartan) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Diovan (Valsartan) requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.Diovan (Valsartan)
