Description

Edecrin (Ethacrynic Acid) is a diuretic (water pill). It is typically used to treat fluid retention (edema) and swelling that is caused by congestive heart failure (when the heart muscle doesn’t pump blood as well as it should), liver disease, kidney disease, or other medical conditions. It may also have other uses.

Additional information

Edecrin (Ethacrynic Acid) is typically given once daily. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. It should be taken after meals. Swallow the tablets whole and do not cut, crush or chew them. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist.

WARNING: In excess amounts, Edecrin (Ethacrynic Acid) may lead to profound diuresis (excessive production of urine) with fluid and electrolyte loss. Use with caution in patients with kidney or liver impairment. Ethacrynic acid may cause ototoxicity, a condition when a person develops hearing or balance problems.

In addition to its desired action, Edecrin (Ethacrynic Acid) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause bloating, clay-colored stools, constipation, darkened urine, indigestion, or itching.
It may cause large, flat, blue or purplish patches in the skin, blurred vision, or ringing in the ears.
It may cause stomach pain, loss of appetite, nausea, or vomiting.

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to ethacrynic acid or any component of the formulation. Do not use in case of anuria (failure of the kidneys to produce urine), or history of severe watery diarrhea caused by this product. Infants (less than 1 year of age) should not use Edecrin (Ethacrynic Acid).

Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. If you're planning a pregnancy, become pregnant, or are breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.

A treatment with Edecrin (Ethacrynic Acid) requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.Edecrin (Ethacrynic Acid)
