Description
Eryc (Erythromycin) is an antibiotic. It is typically used to treat bacterial infections of the lungs, intestines, ears, skin, throat, and genitals. It may also have other uses.
Additional information
Eryc (Erythromycin) is typically given every 8 hours. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Taking the medication with food may reduce the risk of stomach upset. Erythromycin capsules are not recommended for sprinkling, since the capsules are very full and some of the medication may be lost through spillage. If you must open the capsule, take care to open it over food so as not to lose any of the pellets. To open the capsule, hold it with the clear end down. Gently twist off the cap. Sprinkle the entire contents of the capsule on a spoonful of applesauce, fruit jellies, ice cream, or other pleasant-tasting semi-solid food. Do not chew or crush the pellets. Swallow the spoonful of food and drink some water to make sure all the pellets are swallowed. If the pellets are accidentally spilled, start over with a new capsule and a new serving of food. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. WARNING: Long-term use of Erythromycin may cause it not to work anymore in the future (resistance), more bacteria and fungi to grow (superinfection), and bacteria that do not die (resistance). Erythromycin only treats bacterial infections, not viral infections such as the common cold. Use with caution in patients with myasthenia gravis (weakness in the skeletal muscles that worsens after periods of activity and improves after periods of rest), and in liver impairment. In addition to its desired action, Eryc (Erythromycin) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause stomach cramping and discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting. It may cause abnormal liver function tests. It may cause fungal infections of the skin, nails, mouth, vagina, or urinary tract. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to erythromycin, any antibiotic of the same class, or any component of the formulation. The concomitant use with the following medications is not contraindicated: astemizole, cisapride, dihydroergotamine, ergotamine, lovastatin, pimozide, simvastatin, or terfenadine. Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Eryc (Erythromycin) requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.Eryc (Erythromycin)
