Description
Krystexxa (Pegloticase) is an antigout agent. It is typically used for adults with chronic gout who have not responded well to other treatments. It treats high levels of uric acid in the blood, a condition known as gout, which can cause joint pain and inflammation. Gout happens when uric acid builds up in the body and forms crystals in the joints. Krystexxa works by lowering the levels of uric acid, which helps reduce pain and swelling in the affected joints. It may also have other uses.
Additional information
Krystexxa (Pegloticase) is usually given every two weeks through an intravenous (IV) infusion. However, your doctor or pharmacist may suggest a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not receive more of this medication, or receive it more often, than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your healthcare provider. It is typically given at a healthcare facility. WARNING: Infusion reactions occurred in patients treated with KRYSTEXXA. KRYSTEXXA has not been formally studied in patients with congestive heart failure (when the heart cannot pump normally), but some patients in clinical trials experienced exacerbation (worsening of gout). In addition to its desired effects, this medication may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause an allergic reaction, including symptoms such as rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing It may cause gout flare-ups at the beginning of treatment Contraindications: Do not use this medication if you have a known allergy (hypersensitivity) to Krystexxa or any of its ingredients. Before starting KRYSTEXXA, patients at higher risk for G6PDdeficiency (e.g., those of African and Mediterranean ancestry) should be screened (G6PD deficiency is a condition when the body is missing or doesn't have enough of an enzyme called G6PD (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase). This enzyme helps red blood cells work correctly) Taking this medication during pregnancy is contraindicated and harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with this medication requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.
