Description
Lidodan (Lidocaine) is a local anesthetic (numbing medication) agent. It is typically used for the production of topical anesthesia of irritated or inflamed mucous membranes of the mouth and pharynx. It is also useful for reducing gagging during the taking of X-ray pictures. It may also have other uses.

Lidodan (Lidocaine) is typically used as needed but not more frequently than every 3 hours, with a maximum of 8 doses in 24 hours. However, your pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you forget a dose, contact your pharmacist. For mouth irritation or inflammation, swish medication around mouth and then spit it out. In children <3 years, apply to affected area with cotton-tipped applicator (Do not use to relieve teething pain). Do not eat or chew gum for 60 minutes following use. For pharyngeal anesthesia, patient should gargle and may swallow medication. Do not eat or chew gum for 60 minutes following use. WARNING: This product should be used with extreme caution if the mucosa in the area of application has been traumatized, since under such conditions there is the potential for rapid systemic absorption. Life-threatening and fatal events have occured in infants and young children under the age of 3 years with use of Lidocaine Viscous 2% when it was not administered in strict adherence to the dosing and administration recommendations. In the setting of teething pain, Lidocaine Viscous 2% should generally not be used. For other conditions, the use of the product in patients less than 3 years of age should be limited to those situations where safer alternatives are not available or have been tried but failed. In addition to its desired action, Lidodan (Lidocaine) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause bradycardia (low heart rate), hypotension (low blood pressure) It may cause lightheadedness, nervousness, euphoria (feeling or state of intense excitement and happiness), confusion, dizziness, drowsiness, blurred or double vision, vomiting, sensations of heat, cold or numbness, twitching, tremors (shaking movement in your body), unconsciousness, tinnitus (sensation of noise (as a ringing or roaring)). Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to lidocaine or any component of the formulation, hypersensitivity to another local anesthetic of the amide type, traumatized mucosa. Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women.
