Description

Nitoman (Tetrabenazine) is an antichorea agent. Chorea is a movement disorder that causes involuntary jerking or twitching movements. It is typically used to reduce uncontrolled movements associated with Huntington’s disease (Huntington’s disease is a rare genetic disease that causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain), tic disorders (repetitive sudden twitches, movements, or sounds) and Tourette’s syndrome (a disorder that involves repetitive movements or unwanted sounds (tics) that can’t be easily controlled). It may also have other uses.

Additional information

Nitoman (Tetrabenazine) is typically given three times a day. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Tetrabenazine can be taken with or without food. Swallow the whole tablet with a full glass of water. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often than prescribed. Do not crush, break, or chew. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist.

WARNING: Tetrabenazine may increase the risk of depression and suicidal thoughts and behavior in patients with Huntington's disease. Use with caution in patients with a history of depression or prior suicide attempts or ideation. Do not use in patients who are actively suicidal, and in patients with untreated or inadequately treated depression. Tetrabenazine may worsen mood, cognition, rigidity, and functional capacity in patients with Huntington's disease. This medication may cause a potentially fatal syndrome called neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS). Symptoms include high fever, muscle stiffness, confusion or loss of consciousness, sweating, racing or irregular heartbeat, or fainting.

In addition to its desired action, Nitoman (Tetrabenazine) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause drooling, stomach pain, nausea, or vomiting.
It may cause a decrease in blood pressure (hypotension), drowsiness, or reduced alertness.
It may cause an abnormal heart rhythm condition called “QT prolongation”, causing rapid and chaotic heartbeats.
It may cause signs of parkinsonism (e.g., tremor, muscle stiffness, difficulty starting movement, decrease in facial expressions, speech problems).

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to Tetrabenazine or any component of the formulation. Do not use this product if you are currently taking Reserpine (a medication for high blood pressure), Deutetrabenazine or Valbenazine (other antichorea drugs). Patients who are actively suicidal or who have untreated or inadequately treated depression, have taken a MAO inhibitor (antidepressant) within the last 14 days, or liver disease should not take Tetrabenazine.

Taking Nitoman (Tetrabenazine) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.

A treatment with Nitoman (Tetrabenazine) requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.Nitoman (Tetrabenazine)
