Additional information
Tecfidera (Dimethyl Fumarate) is typically taken twice daily. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. It may be taken with or without food. If you experience stomach problems, take the medication with food to reduce these effects. Swallow the capsules whole with water or another fluid. Do not divide, crush, dissolve, suck, or chew on the capsule. Administration of aspirin (non enteric coated up to a dose of 325 mg) 30 minutes prior to dimethyl fumarate may also reduce the incidence of flushing. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. WARNING: Dimethyl fumarate can reduce the number of cells that fight infection in the body (white blood cells). There have been reports of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PmL) after using dimethyl fumarate. PmL is a rare disorder that causes nerve damage in the brain and is more likely to occur in people who have a weakened immune system. Live attenuated vaccines such as yellow fever, cholera, typhoid, varicella, meningococcal, and diphtheria should not be given while you are taking dimethyl fumarate. Treatment with dimethyl fumarate may cause kidney or liver impairment. In addition to its desired action, Tecfidera (Dimethyl Fumarate) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause stomach pain or cramps, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, or heartburn. It may cause flushing (e.g., becoming red in the face or body, feeling warm or hot, itchiness or burning sensation). It may cause signs of infection (fever or chills, severe diarrhea, shortness of breath, dizziness, headache, stiff neck, or unexplained weight loss). Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to dimethyl fumarate or any component of the formulation. Taking Tecfidera (Dimethyl Fumarate) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Tecfidera (Dimethyl Fumarate) requires regular monitoring by a doctor.
