Description

Onivyde (Irinotecan Hydrochloride) is an anticancer agent. It is typically used in combination with other medications to treat pancreatic cancer that has spread and has not responded to previous treatment.
It works by interfering with the growth and spread of cancer cells in the body. It may also have other uses.

Additional information

Onivyde (Irinotecan Hydrochloride) is usually given once every two weeks. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. This medication is given by injection into a vein by a healthcare professional.

WARNING:  if severe diarrhea occurs, subsequent doses needed to be reduced or interrupted. Severe myelosuppression may occur (it is a condition in which bone marrow activity is decreased, resulting in fewer red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets).

In addition to its desired action, this medication may cause some side effects, notably:

It may cause anemia (decreased red blood cells), neutropenia (decreased white blood cells)

It may cause diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and abdominal (belly) pain

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity (severe allergy) to any component of the formulation. ONIVYDE is contraindicated during breast-feeding.

Taking this medication during pregnancy is contraindicated and harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.

A treatment with this medication requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.
