Description
Primaquine (Primaquine) is an antimalarial agent. It is typically used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites. It may also have other uses.
Additional information
Primaquine (Primaquine) is typically used once daily. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you forget a dose, contact your pharmacist. Administer with meals to decrease the risk of stomach upset. If the patient vomits within 30 minutes of taking a dose, then they should repeat the dose. WARNING: since anemia (a condition in which you lack enough healthy red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen to your body's tissues), methemoglobinemia (a blood disorder), and leukopenia (a lower-than-normal number of leukocytes in the blood) may occur following administration of large doses of primaquine, do not exceed adult dosage of 1 tablet daily for fourteen days, make routine blood examinations during therapy, drug should be discontinued immediately if marked darkening of urine or sudden decrease in hemoglobin (a protein in your red blood cells) concentration or leukocyte (white blood cells that help your body fight germs) count occurs. In addition to its desired action, Primaquine (Primaquine) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause abdominal cramps or pain, dizziness, heartburn, itching, nausea, rash, vomiting. It may cause anemia, cardiac arrhythmia (an irregular heartbeat). Contraindications: if you are allergic to primaquine or any ingredients of the medication, if you are experiencing a flare-up of rheumatoid arthritis (inflammation of the joints) or lupus erythematosus (autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks its own tissues, causing widespread inflammation and tissue damage), if you are very sick with a disease or condition that affects blood cell production, if you are receiving other medications that cause breakdown of blood cells or reduced blood cell production, if you have recently been treated with the medication quinacrine, if you are pregnant, if you have severe glucose-6 phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency (when the body doesn't have enough of an enzyme called G6PD). Taking Primaquine (Primaquine) during pregnancy is contraindicated and harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.
