Description

Renvela (Sevelamer) is a phosphate binder. It is typically used to control blood phosphorus levels in patients with chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis (process of purifying the blood when the kidneys are not working normally). It may also have other uses.

Additional information

Renvela (Sevelamer)'s dosage depends on the condition (usual range: 2.4 g - 4.8 g). However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. It should be taken with meals. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. Do not crush or chew the tablet. If you forget a dose, contact your pharmacist. 
 
WARNING: Sevelamer may cause a bowel obstruction to form. Dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) and tablet retention in the esophagus (swallowing tube) have also been reported with the tablet formulation, consider change to suspension formulation in patients with a history of swallowing disorders. Sevelamer may cause reductions in vitamin D, E, K, or folic acid absorption.
 
In addition to its desired action, Renvela (Sevelamer) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, or indigestion. 
It may cause nausea or vomiting. 
It may cause itchiness or skin rash. 
 
Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to sevelamer or any component of the formulation. Patients with bowel obstruction should not use Renvela (Sevelamer).
 
Taking Renvela (Sevelamer) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.
 
A treatment with Renvela (Sevelamer) requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.Renvela (Sevelamer)
