Description
Retrovir AZT (Zidovudine) is an antiviral agent. It is typically used in combination with other antiviral agents to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV, a virus that attacks the body’s immune system. If HIV is not treated, it can lead to AIDS). It may also have other uses.

The recommended adult dose of zidovudine for people weighing 30 kilograms or more is 600 mg taken by mouth daily with other antiretroviral agents. It may be taken as either 6 teaspoonfuls (30 mL) every 12 hours or 4 teaspoonfuls (20 mL) every eight hours. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. It may be taken with or without food. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. WARNING: Zidovudine is associated with blood problems (hematologic toxicity), including neutropenia (low white blood cell count) and severe anemia (low red blood cell count). Use with caution in patients with bone marrow suppression (a decrease in bone marrow activity that results in reduced production of blood cells). Long-term use may cause muscle pain or problems (myopathy). Zidovudine can cause a rare but serious condition called lactic acidosis (too much acid in the blood) along with a swollen and fatty liver. Use with caution in case of liver disease or kidney disease (dose may be adjusted). In addition to its desired action, this medication may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause changes in skin, fingernail, or toenail color. It may cause headaches, or malaise, signs of anemia (low red blood cells, e.g., pale skin, unusual tiredness, or weakness). It may cause diarrhea, nausea, stomach pain, or vomiting, muscle pain. It may cause difficulty concentrating, increased risk of infections (fever, chills, or sore throat), trouble sleeping. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to Zidovudine or any component of the formulation, very low number of white or red blood cells in the bloodstream. Taking this medication during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with this medication requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.
