Description
Risperdal Consta (Risperidone extended-release) is an antipsychotic agent. It is typically used for the treatment of bipolar mania (bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings that include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression)) by adults and treatment of schizophrenia (a serious mental disorder in which people interpret reality abnormally) by adults. It may also have other uses.

Risperdal Consta (Risperidone extended-release) is typically used every 2 weeks. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. If you forget a dose, contact your pharmacist. It will be given to you by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinical setting. It will be injected into a muscle. WARNING: May cause anticholinergic effects (confusion, agitation, constipation, xerostomia (dry mouth), blurred vision, urinary retention), use with caution in patients with decreased gastrointestinal motility (abnormal intestinal contractions, such as spasms and intestinal paralysis), urinary retention, BPH (prostate gland enlargement), xerostomia (dry mouth), or visual problems. In addition to its desired action, Risperdal Consta (Risperidone extended-release) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause constipation, diarrhea It may cause decreased sexual interest or ability, difficulty sleeping and staying asleep It may cause dizziness, drowsiness It may cause headaches Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to risperidone, paliperidone, or any component of the formulation Taking Risperdal Consta (Risperidone extended-release) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Risperdal Consta (Risperidone extended-release) requires regular monitoring by a doctor.
