Salofalk (Mesalamine)

Description

Salofalk (Mesalamine) is an anti-inflammatory agent. It is typically used acute ulcerative colitis (inflammation of the lining of the large bowel and rectum) and in the prevention of relapse of Crohn’s disease in patients following bowel resection. It may also have other uses.

Additional information

Salofalk (Mesalamine) is typically taken as 2 tablets 3 or 4 times a day. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Swallow the whole tablet, 1 hour before meals with plenty of liquid. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you forget a dose, contact your pharmacist.

WARNING: Intact, partially intact, and/or tablet shells have been reported in the stool. This medication contains iron, use with caution in patients receiving iron supplementation or who are at risk of iron overload. Salofalk may cause an "acute intolerance syndrome" (characterized by cramping, abdominal pain, and bloody diarrhea) which may be hard to discern from an exacerbation of the disease. Use with caution in patients with kidney disease and in elderly patients.

In addition to its desired action, Salofalk (Mesalamine) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause stomach pain or cramps, gas, nausea, or vomiting.
It may cause an increased urge to go to the bathroom, irritation of the rectal area, or diarrhea.
It may cause back pain, blood pressure changes, fatigue, or tiredness.
It may cause acne, hair loss, or headaches.

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to mesalamine, aminosalicylates, salicylates such as aspirin, or any component of the formulation.

Taking Salofalk (Mesalamine) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.
