Description
Somavert (Pegvisomant) works by blocking the action of growth hormone (a hormone that promotes the growth of cells and tissues). It is typically used to treat acromegaly (a condition where the body produces too much growth hormone, causing body tissues and bones to grow more quickly). It may also have other uses.

Somavert (Pegvisomant) is typically used once daily. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. For subcutaneous (under the skin) administration only, it is given as a shot into the fatty part of the skin in the upper arm, thigh, buttocks, or stomach area. The initial dose be administered under the supervision of prescribing healthcare provider. WARNING: This medication may lower blood glucose (sugar) levels. If you have diabetes (high blood sugar level), discuss with your doctor how Somavert (Pegvisomant) may affect your medical condition. This medication may cause an increase in liver function test values and may cause liver problems. Your doctor will monitor your liver function with regular blood tests while you are taking Somavert (Pegvisomant). In addition to its desired action, Somavert (Pegvisomant) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause dizziness, flu-like symptoms (e.g. sudden lack of energy, fever, cough, sore throat), nausea, pain. It may cause pain, redness, swelling at the place of injection, diarrhea. It may cause abnormal liver function tests, chest pain, hypertension (high blood pressure). Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to pegvisomant and any component of the formulation. Taking Somavert (Pegvisomant) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Somavert (Pegvisomant) requires regular monitoring by a doctor.
