Description

Tegretol CR (Carbamazepine controlled-release) is an anticonvulsant agent. It is typically used to treat seizures. It is also used to treat the nerve pain of trigeminal neuralgia (sudden, severe facial pain) and acute mania (extremely unstable euphoric or irritable mood) and for the prevention of bipolar disorder (a brain disorder that causes changes in a person’s mood, energy, and ability to function). It may also have other uses.

Additional information

Tegretol CR (Carbamazepine controlled-release) is typically given once or twice daily. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. It should be taken with food. Swallow the whole tablet with a full glass of water. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often than prescribed. Do not crush, break, or chew. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist.

WARNING: Long term use of carbamazepine may decrease bone mineral density causing osteoporosis (weakened bones) and fractures. This medication can decrease the number of neutrophils (a type of white blood cell that helps fight infection), red blood cells (which carry oxygen), and platelets (which help your blood to clot). Carbamazepine may also alter mental abilities (confusion, slowing of movements, difficulty with concentration/attention, difficulty with memory, speech or language problems) and sedation (somnolence or fatigue). Dose may be adjusted in case of kidney disease.

In addition to its desired action, Tegretol CR (Carbamazepine controlled-release) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause abdominal pain, acne, constipation, dryness of mouth or throat, nausea, vomiting, and weight gain.
It may cause clumsiness or unsteadiness, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, loss of appetite, and taste changes.
It may cause hair or nail changes, memory loss, red eyes, ringing in the ears, and sexual problems (males).
It may cause increased sensitivity of skin to sunlight (skin rash, itching, redness, or severe sunburn), and increased sweating.

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to carbamazepine, TCAs (antidepressants), or any component of the formulation. Do not use in case of bone marrow depression (decrease in production of cells responsible for providing immunity (white blood cells), carrying oxygen (red blood cells), and/or those responsible for normal blood clotting (platelets)). Do not use during or within 14 days of taking a MAO inhibitor (antidepressant). Its concomitant use with nefazodone (antidepressant), or anti-HIV medications (HIV is a virus that attacks cells that help the body fight infection) is contraindicated.

Taking Tegretol CR (Carbamazepine controlled-release) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.

A treatment with Tegretol CR (Carbamazepine controlled-release) requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.Tegretol CR (Carbamazepine controlled-release)
