Trileptal (Oxcarbazepine)

Description

Trileptal (Oxcarbazepine) is an anticonvulsant agent. It is typically used to treat seizures. It may also have other uses.

Additional information

Trileptal (Oxcarbazepine) is typically given twice a day for children over the age of 6. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for your child. It can be taken with or without food. Shake the bottle well before measuring a dose. Use an oral syringe to measure each dose of the liquid, as it gives a more accurate measurement than household teaspoons. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist.

WARNING: Long term use of Oxcarbazepine may decrease bone mineral density causing osteoporosis (weakened bones) and fractures. This medication can decrease the number of neutrophils (a type of white blood cell that helps fight infection), red blood cells (which carry oxygen), and platelets (which help your blood to clot). Oxcarbazepine may also alter mental abilities (confusion, slowing of movements, difficulty with concentration/attention, difficulty with memory, speech or language problems) and sedation (somnolence or fatigue). It may lower the levels of sodium in the blood (hyponatremia) and low levels of the thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism).

In addition to its desired action, Trileptal (Oxcarbazepine) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause ataxia (lack of muscle control or coordination of voluntary movement), abnormal gait, or mood disturbances.
It may cause vomiting, nausea, or stomach pain.
It may cause visual disturbances such as double vision, nystagmus (repetitive, uncontrolled movement of the eye), or blurred vision.
It may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or headache.

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to Oxcarbazepine, Eslicarbazepine acetate, or any component of the formulation.
