Description
Zavesca (Miglustat) is an inhibitor agent of a protein that is causing Gaucher disease. It is typically used for the treatment of adult patients with mild-to-moderate type 1 Gaucher disease (the result of a buildup of certain fatty substances in certain organs, particularly your spleen and liver) for whom enzyme (protein) replacement therapy is not a therapeutic option (e.g., due to allergy, hypersensitivity, or poor venous access). It may also have other uses.

Zavesca (Miglustat) is typically taken three times daily. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you forget a dose, contact your pharmacist. May be administered with or without food, administration between meals may decrease the incidence of diarrhea. Capsules should be taken at the same time each day at regular intervals. If patient is unable to tolerate or swallow capsule whole and powder is administered, mix powder into a liquid immediately prior to use (do not store), sweetening agents are not expected to interact. WARNING: Peripheral neuropathy (tingling, numbness.) has been reported, neurological (brain and nerves) monitoring is required. Weigh risk versus benefit of therapy if patient develops symptoms, treatment discontinuation may be necessary. In addition to its desired action, Zavesca (Miglustat) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause headaches, dizziness It may cause weight loss It may cause diarrhea, abdominal pain, flatulence (gas), nausea, vomiting Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to miglustat or any component of the formulation, women who are or may become pregnant Taking Zavesca (Miglustat) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Zavesca (Miglustat) requires regular monitoring by a doctor.
