Description
Zyban (Bupropion) is an antidepressant. It is typically used in addition to counseling, as an aid for quitting smoking. It is also used to treat depression. It may also have other uses.
Additional information
Zyban (Bupropion) is typically given as once daily for 3 days, then twice daily. Multiple daily doses should be taken at least 8 hours apart. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. You should start taking bupropion at least one week before stopping smoking. Treatment with bupropion is usually for 7 to 12 weeks. It may be taken with or without meals. Swallow the tablets whole and do not cut, crush or chew them. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. WARNING: This medication may increase the risk of suicidal thinking and behavior in children, adolescents, and young adults. Bupropion may affect the mental or physical abilities needed to drive or operate machinery. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous tasks until you have determined how Zyban (Bupropion) affects you. This medication may increase the risk of seizures. It may cause the symptoms of glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye) to become worse. Use with caution in patients with heart disease, liver or impairment, or in the elderly. In addition to its desired action, Zyban (Bupropion) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause increased blood pressure (hypertension), increased heart rate, trouble sleeping, migraine (severe headache), headache, or dizziness. It may cause appetite changes, weight loss, bloating, constipation, dryness of mouth, nausea, or vomiting. It may cause new or worsened emotional or behavioral problems, agitation, anxiety, or false beliefs that cannot be changed by facts. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to bupropion or any other component of the formulation. Do not use in case of bulimia (an eating disorder characterized by binge eating followed by vomiting) or anorexia nervosa (an eating disorder characterized by an abnormally low body weight and an intense fear of gaining weight). Do not use in case of abrupt discontinuation of alcohol, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, and antiepileptic (anti-seizure) drugs. The concomitant use of MAO inhibitors (antidepressants) (concurrently or within 14 days of discontinuing the MAOI or bupropion) is contraindicated. Do not initiate bupropion in a patient receiving linezolid (antibiotic) or IV methylene blue (a dye and medication). Taking Zyban (Bupropion) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Zyban (Bupropion) requires regular monitoring by a doctor.
