Description

Maxalt RPD (Rizatriptan orally-disintegrating tablet) is an antimigraine agent. It is typically used for the acute treatment of migraine (severe headache) with or without aura. Aura is the temporary visual or other disturbances that usually strike before other migraine symptoms such as intense head pain, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound. It may also have other uses.

Additional information

Maxalt RPD (Rizatriptan orally-disintegrating tablet) is typically used once daily. If the migraine headache comes back after being relieved, another dose may be taken no sooner than 2 hours after the first dose was taken. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. For greater effectiveness and faster relief, used this product at the first sign of a migraine. It may be administered with or without food. Remove the blister from the foil pouch. Do not push the wafer through the blister, rather, peel open the with dry hands and place the wafer on your tongue. The wafer will dissolve rapidly and be swallowed with your saliva. No liquid is needed to take the wafer. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you forget a dose, contact your pharmacist. 
 
WARNING: Acute migraine agents (e.g., triptans, opioids, ergotamine, or a combination of the agents) used for 10 or more days per month may lead to worsening of headaches (medication overuse headache), withdrawal treatment may be necessary in the setting of overuse.
 
In addition to its desired action, Maxalt RPD (Rizatriptan orally-disintegrating tablet) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause chest pain, flushing, or palpitations (a rapid, strong, or irregular heartbeat).
It may cause dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, pain, feeling of heaviness, or headache.
It may cause nausea, xerostomia (dry mouth), sore throat, abdominal distress, diarrhea, or vomiting.
It may cause weakness, jaw pain, jaw pressure, jaw tightness, neck pain, neck pressure, or neck tightness. 
 
Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to Rizatriptan or any component of the formulation. Do not use in case of documented ischemic heart disease (where the heart doesn't get enough oxygen), or other significant cardiovascular disease, coronary artery vasospasm (disorder that causes the blood vessels outside of your heart and brain to narrow, block, or spasm), history of stroke or transient ischemic attack (temporary periods of symptoms similar to those of a stroke), peripheral vascular disease (disease of the vessels of the lower limbs), ischemic bowel disease (where the blood flow to part of the large intestine (colon) is temporarily reduced), uncontrolled hypertension (high blood pressure), during or within 2 weeks of taking MAO inhibitors (antidepressants), during or within 24 hours of treatment with another drug from the same class as Rizatriptan, or an ergot-containing or ergot-type medication (e.g., methysergide, dihydroergotamine). Patients with ophthalmoplegic migraine (temporary vision disturbances) or severe liver disease should not use this product.
 
Taking Maxalt RPD (Rizatriptan orally-disintegrating tablet) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.
