Description
Mydriacyl (Tropicamide) is an ophthalmic (eye) agent. It is typically used to produce mydriasis (dilation of the pupil of the eye) and cycloplegia (paralysis of the ciliary muscle of the eye, resulting in a loss of accommodation) in diagnostic procedures. It may also have other uses.
Additional information
Mydriacyl (Tropicamide) is usually given once 15 to 30 min before eye examination. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. Wash and dry your hands before and after using the eye drops. Shake the bottle well. Tilt your head backward and look up. Then, gently pull your lower eyelid down to form a small pocket and squeeze one drop of medication into this pocket. Don't blink or wipe your eyes. Close your eyes while pressing a finger against the inside corner of your eye for about 1 minute to help keep the medication in your eye. If you need to take more than one drop, wait a few minutes in between each drop. WARNING: Remove lenses prior to administration, may impair physical or mental abilities, patients must be cautioned about performing tasks that require mental alertness (e.g., operating machinery, driving). May cause a transient increase in intraocular (in the eye) pressure. For topical ophthalmic (eye) use only. Remove contact lenses prior to administration. To avoid excessive systemic absorption, apply gentle finger pressure to lacrimal sac for 2 to 3 minutes following application. Do not touch dropper tip to eyelids or any surface. These events may occur at anytime during therapy and without warning. In addition to its desired action, Mydriacyl (Tropicamide) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause headaches, nausea, vomiting and xerostomia (a condition in which the salivary glands in your mouth don't make enough saliva to keep your mouth wet). It may cause stinging of eyes, increase heartbeat, allergic reactions and blurred vision. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity or severe allergic reaction to tropicamide or any component of the formulation. Known or suspected narrow angle glaucoma (high pressure in the eyes), small infants (<3 months of age). Taking Mydriacyl (Tropicamide) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Mydriacyl (Tropicamide) requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.Mydriacyl (Tropicamide)
