Tetracycline (Tetracycline)

Description

Tetracycline (Tetracycline) is an antibiotic. It is typically used to treat infections caused by bacteria including pneumonia (respiratory infection that affects the lungs) and other respiratory tract infections, certain infections of skin, eye, lymphatic, intestinal, genital and urinary systems, and certain other infections. It may also have other uses.

Additional information

Tetracycline (Tetracycline) is typically used four times daily. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you forget a dose, contact your pharmacist. Administer on an empty stomach (1 hour prior to, or 2 hours after meals) to increase total absorption and with adequate amount of fluid to reduce risk of esophageal irritation and ulceration. Administer at least 1 to 2 hours prior to, or 4 hours after antacid because aluminum and magnesium cations may chelate with tetracycline and reduce its total absorption.
WARNING: As with other antibiotics, tetracycline can cause a severe form of diarrhea. If you develop severe diarrhea while taking (or within a few weeks of taking) Tetracycline (Tetracycline), contact your doctor. Risk of liver damage may be increased in patients with pre-existing liver or renal (kidney) impairment. Use with caution in patients with renal impairment (kidneys), dosage adjustment recommended.
In addition to its desired action, Tetracycline (Tetracycline) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, upset stomach, loss of appetite.
It may cause white patches or sores inside your mouth or on your lips.
It may cause swollen tongue, tongue discolouration, trouble swallowing.
It may cause sores or swelling in your rectal or genital area, vaginal itching or discharge.
Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to any of the tetracyclines or any component of the formulation. Use is contraindicated in pediatric patients, in severe renal (kidney) and liver impairment. Taking Tetracycline (Tetracycline) during pregnancy is harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product.
